The concept of global warming poses a serious threat to life on Earth, and there is no denying the fact that something must be done in order to save countless lives, and the very planet we live on. Winston Churchill once stated, It is not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do whats required. In order to secure the future of the next generation, and prevent humans from reaching extinction under a major catastrophe, there are certain steps that need to be taken.
Listen to the Environmentalists
Governments and environmentalists around the world are doing their best to spread awareness among people regarding the dangers of global warming. Documentaries are being released and campaigns are being held. Experiences like the Kyoto Protocol and Environmental Nations Meet have educated and equipped governments in methods of preventing the destruction of the planet. However, the government is as strong as its people and therefore as citizens of Mother Nature, humans need to cut some every-day activities that lead to the pollution of the atmosphere.
A Stitch in Time Saves Nine
Emission of gases like carbon dioxide, carbon mono oxide and chlorofluorocarbon has ruptured the ozone layer that protects us from the UV rays of the sun. While there is no way to stitch or fill these holes, there are ways to prevent other holes from forming and the current ones from expanding. Smart usage of appliances and smart consumption of resources can help stop global warming to a great extent.
Trees to the Rescue
Planting a greater number of trees would only benefit the planet. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen which would help in lowering the overall temperature of the planet. Rising temperatures are causing the glaciers to melt which will someday submerge cities around the globe. The best way to put a stop to rising temperatures is to plant trees and stop the destruction of forests around the world.
Keep an Eye on Hybrid Vehicles
Vehicles cause a lot of pollution and therefore it is highly recommended to drive energy efficient vehicles and/or stop using vehicles to travel short distances. Cycling or walking in cases of shorter distances can help reduce the emission of poisonous gases in the atmosphere. As time goes on, a greater number of hybrid vehicles are hitting the market, and while they are still extremely expensive, it is the hope that one day they will be more affordable for the average consumer.
Use Alternative Resources
Plenty of electrical appliances emit greenhouse gases: incandescent bulb emits 300 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and refrigerators emit a substantial amount of CFC. Green power is a term referred to using renewable resources of energy like wind and water. Making use of these resources helps in preventing around 310 kg of carbon dioxide from hitting the ozone layer.
Reuse - Recycle - Reduce
The three Rs in education have taken on a whole new meaning. No longer is it reading, and riting and rithmetic, but reduce, reuse, recycle. Waste material that come out of homes everyday leads to anaerobic decomposition, which further leads to emission of methane which is no friend of the environment. It is therefore necessary to reduce the use of polybags, reuse products like paper and reduce bulk dumping of garbage.
Water heaters, air conditioners, laundry machines and other similar appliances have the problem of emitting over 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. In the end, the basic movement to stop global warming is defined by a united effort. People need to work together, and work as a team, to stop the potential onset of global warming.
