More homeowners are making the switch to LED lights for home use and this trend is expected to continue. Installing energy saving efficient LED lights in your home is one of the best ways to begin conserving energy. Its not a huge transformation making it something that most consumers can do even in these hard financial times. Still, there is a lot of confusion surrounding LED lights for home use and many consumers simply dont know where to begin. Since LED bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, you need to make sure youre using them correctly and that you dont purchase something you cant use or that doesnt produce enough light for a specific area. When buying LED lights you need to remember that most of them provide directional light, so they wont illuminate the whole room the same way the incandescent bulbs do. However, manufacturers are developing new designs that will provide wider angle illumination. When youre ready to make the switch the following information can help. Begin by choosing the rooms that will benefit the most from the switch. This will normally be the kitchen and dining room area, living rooms and family rooms. These are the areas of the home where the lights are used the most and stay on the longest so they use the most energy. They would also be beneficial in areas that are hard to reach such as stairs, basements, porches and rooms with cathedral ceilings. Since the bulbs last so much longer than the incandescent bulbs, using them in hard to reach areas just makes good sense. Under normal circumstances youll want to use the bulbs that produce a whiter light on the outside of the home and the ones that produce a warmer light on the inside. LED lights work very well under cabinets and in places where you want to accent certain areas such as UV sensitive paintings. Most LED bulbs provide directional lighting and these work great in floodlights, track lights and similar fixtures. The globe shaped bulbs will provide light to wider areas so these work best in lamps and regular light fixtures. A directional light would not be very beneficial in a ceiling fixture where the lights point outward. The majority of the light will be focused sideways towards the top of the wall instead of where youll need it. LED lights home are safer to use than traditional bulbs. They dont contain mercury and theyre more durable so they wont break easily. They dont produce heat like other bulbs so they wont heat up rooms as quickly, which will also save on energy bills when it comes to cooling your home in the summer. There are replacement bulbs that will fit into the light fixtures that you already have in your home, but there are some fixtures these bulbs will not work in. Before you buy LED bulbs you need to make sure the ones you choose will work in the fixtures you plan to use them in. Otherwise, youll need to replace the fixtures with something thats compatible or not make the switch. |
