Industrial LED Lighting

Hope you find this article on "Industrial LED Lighting" written by our LED expert useful.
One of the innovative uses of industrial LED lighting is for large warehouses that need to be operated under strict climate control. Because conventional metal halide lamps emit altogether too much heat, and drain extra power during the ‘warm up’ process prior to producing light, LED technology has provided the solution. Industrial LED lighting requires no warm up period and emits less heat, making it the best source of light for situations like this.

Instant Start for Instant Light

When it comes to lighting in refrigeration, industrial or otherwise, temperature is a huge issue. Many lighting systems are ineffective in sub-freezing conditions and require a ‘warm up’ period before they can light up. Several manufacturers of industrial strength LED lights have high bay lamps specifically designed for use in refrigeration units. They require no start up periods which means when the light is switched on, or the door is opened, there is ‘instant on’ light available for safety and efficiency. The Koolbay™ LED Freezer luminaire fixtures are set up to be triggered by occupancy, or they can be time controlled by clock, for even greater energy efficiency.

High Bay 120 Watt LED Lights

Many large warehouses now use several 400 watt metal halide high bay lamps which eat up a significant portion of their electricity in more ways than one. Of course, there was no way they could operate without light; so many industries had to suffer the consequences. Those overhead lamps did produce light, however they also produced heat. This meant that in buildings that needed temperature control for perishable goods, the air conditioning units had to work excessively hard. Currently there is a 120 watt LED High Bay lamp that emits much less heat, uses 1/3 the electricity to power and puts out equal lumens. This type of light contains no mercury which also makes it infinitely safer for the environment.

Cooler and Freezer Thermal Load Savings

As an example of just how efficient industrial LED lighting is, Hubbel Industrial Lighting, the manufacturers of Koolbay™, have provided an energy savings comparison chart. Because LED lights emit much less heat, and HVAC cooling systems don’t need to work so hard, there is a lower BTU load, which is where the real savings comes in. For example, a 24’ x 7’ foot area with a 400 watt LED light will have an approximate savings of $298.72 without taking cooling into account. Once a freezer thermal load is taken into consideration, the savings is $203.86. For a large industrial warehouse with literally dozens of high bay lamps, that’s significant savings in the course of a year.

Industrial LED lighting provides an energy efficient light source that is low maintenance and environmentally safe. Lamps can last as long as 100,000 hours, operate well under frigid temperatures, and provide equal luminance with much less heat. In fact, LED technology is being utilized by growing numbers of industries and it is estimated that within a decade the transition to industrial LED lights will be universally complete.
