Although most metropolitan areas are well aware of just how energy efficient LED lights are, the initial cost to make the switch is more than they have in their budget. As a result, it appears to be a two edged sword because conventional halogen lights cost so much more to operate than LEDs, but there is no money in the budget to make the transition. Fortunately, the federal government stepped in to ease the process, to some extent, by making stimulus money available for just such an event.
Stimulus Package for LED Lights for Street Lights
Federal stimulus money has made it possible for many of these local councils to begin transitioning to LED lights for street lights which will actually save the smaller communities money within a very short period of time. In fact, this stimulus money couldnt have come at a better time since the government has also legislated that by the year 2012, all lamp manufacturers must provide bulbs that are at least 33% more efficient. Unfortunately, neither halogen, incandescent nor fluorescent lamps will be able to meet that criterion, which leaves only LED lights. It will become virtually impossible within a very short period of time to find replacement lamps for those outdated street lights.
Types of LED Lights for Streets
Most often, consumers simply think of LED lights for street lights as being those overhead lights that brighten up dark nights to provide better visibility and safety. There are, however, other types of lights for streets that serve a number of other purposes. Traffic lights, for instance, are actually also street lights; they just serve to direct the flow of traffic. Along those same lines, beacon lights for bridges and railroad tracks also direct traffic as do hazard and construction lights along the roadways. Federal stimulus money is in place to help communities make the transition as financially painless as possible since many just dont have the funds to make the transition.
LED lights for street lights, no matter what their function, are more energy efficient and infinitely safer for the environment. They cost less to operate and last from 17 to 34 years before needing to be replaced. Although the initial cost of transitioning is high, the long-term savings are phenomenal. With or without federal stimulus money, LED lights are an investment in the future of any community.
