The LED's colour comes from the diode's chemical composition. A major breakthrough came in the 1990s, when scientists discovered how to mix yellow blue to create a white-light LED. Before this, LED bulbs came in one of the primary colours. This made them great for indicators, instrument lighting and displays, but not so great for replacing our standard incandescent lights. California was the first state that passed a law requiring the eventual replacement of all incandescent bulbs by LED light bulbs.

It's not all business with LED bulbs, either. In fact, casinos, country clubs and high-end resorts have now started using linear light strips with LED bulbs for their displays and lighting source. For most, it just makes good business sense to use the bulbs that are going to last the longest.
