What is an LED Light Bulb

Find the answer to the frequently asked LED Lights related question: What is an LED Light Bulb?

What is an LED Light Bulb?

A revolution is coming to the world of light bulbs. Are you ready for it? In case you haven't been keeping up, LED (light emitting diode) light bulbs are on their way to becoming the primary source of lighting in the world. That's not a bad thing. There are so many benefits that LED light bulbs have over our traditional bulbs, that most people will say, "It's about time."

Definition of the LED Light Bulb

You can best understand what the LED light bulb is by how it differs from our current incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. An LED bulb generates light through a diode, which is a semi-conductive component. This is in contrast to the filament used in the incandescent light and the luminary gas used in a fluorescent bulb. In the LED light bulb, a low voltage current passes through a diode. This agitates the electrons inside, which causes the light to radiate outward into the surroundings. The light burns cool and does not cause heat pollution in living or work areas. Because the bulbs don't depend on inert gases, there is no risk to the environment

Variety in LED Light Bulbs

Although the early bulbs were limited in the colours available, today they come in almost every imaginable colour. This includes both the bulbs meant for home use and commercial use.

The LED's colour comes from the diode's chemical composition. A major breakthrough came in the 1990s, when scientists discovered how to mix yellow blue to create a white-light LED. Before this, LED bulbs came in one of the primary colours. This made them great for indicators, instrument lighting and displays, but not so great for replacing our standard incandescent lights. When the white LED bulb came on the scene, this introduced a host of new applications for LED light bulbs.

Goodbye to the Incandescent Bulb

Soon after this revolution in LED bulbs, governments began seeing the benefits of the new technology, as both an environmentally-friendly lighting source, and cost-saving measure. California was the first state that passed a law requiring the eventual replacement of all incandescent bulbs by LED light bulbs.

Recreational Uses

It's not all business with LED bulbs, either. In fact, casinos, country clubs and high-end resorts have now started using linear light strips with LED bulbs for their displays and lighting source. For most, it just makes good business sense to use the bulbs that are going to last the longest.

The Verdict on LED Light Bulbs

Every nation today is searching for new environmentally-friendly power sources. A new form of lighting, such as LED bulbs helps achieve their overall goal. It's also good for you and your home and / or business, because when you save on energy, you save on money. Plus, it's just easier on you when you don't have to change your bulbs as often. So change to LED bulbs and start counting the savings.
